The 11th Annual Gathering of Catholic Men is on November 12, 2016 at the David Lawrence Convention Center. The theme this year is “Go Make Disciples.” I was talking about the Gathering recently with a friend who has never attended it. He asked, “Why have you gone year after year?” I was amazed at how quickly I came up with three distinct reasons:
My personal relationship with Jesus – each of the speakers seem to always have a message that relates to my journey with the Lord. I learn from all of them, not only strengthening my relationship with Jesus, but in obtaining guidance AND becoming stronger in my faith. Add to that the Sacraments, specifically the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and I feel like I’ve left each year’s Gathering with a massive spiritual lift.
A real sense of community – I’ve come to believe that we are not meant to go through life alone. Men need men. Iron sharpens iron. Whether it be 2,000+ men singing together, participating in the Mass, conversing after each talk, or enjoying fellowship over lunch, the community atmosphere is a special part of the Gathering. How inspiring it is to spend an entire day with like-minded men, all of us Brothers in Christ!
The courage to share – the great content combined with the sense of community, all a huge shot in the arm, provides me with the courage to share my faith with those that I had been hesitant to approach previously. It also gives me the motivation to discuss Jesus with those closest to me, my family and friends.
The Gathering of Catholic Men is an event that I put on my calendar as soon as the date is announced every year.
I wouldn’t miss it for anything -- it’s that great an experience.
